I try to investigate the processes by which Observation Drawing develop processes of image creativity. In an increasingly optocentric and fully digitized society it becomes evident that creations initiated ""out of the machine"" include obviously human factors and usually original factors that make them stand out in the cultural industries as a whole. This research deals with the History of Drawing, Engraving, Painting of the Graphic Arts but also of Architecture and Design. I am also interested in justifying the artistic method as a process of investigation and production of knowledge.

PhD in 1999, Visual Communication in Architecture and Aggregation in Design in 2016.

Corte-Real documented the inception of the word Design in the English Language in the late 1580’s and the evolution of its meanings until the middle of the 19th Century. Presented Francisco d'Hollanda, internationally, as the first scholar to try to define a science of Design (as Drawing).

He led the team that created UNIDCOM in 2003 and the team that created the doctorate in Design of IADE in 2012. Co-Organized 6 international conferences in Design between 2000 and 2013 in which more than 1000 papers were presented and published. Organized the first conferences of the Design Research Society and the Drawing Research Network outside Anglo-Saxon countries. He was a member of the DRS Council, CURE (Cumulus Research, task force for research into this association and was a member of its Executive Board). Created in 2007 and maintained Journal Online "The Radical Designist" in open access. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of Intellect's Journal: Drawing: Research Theory Practice. Reviewed articles for the Journals: Design Issues MIT Press, Design History Journal, Oxford University Press, TRACEY: online journal of contemporary drawing research; International POSTER Journal, Journal of Design Research, Inderscience and for the book CLARK, Hazel, BRODY, David, Design Studies, A Reader, Oxford & New York: Berg. Participated in dozens of scientific committees of international conferences.

He successfully supervised 3 doctorates and 70 master's degrees. He participated in 27 doctoral juries, three of them outside Portugal.

He has published numerous articles in the areas of Drawing, Design and Architecture and two books as author, one as coordinator and seven of conference proceedings.

Leads the team that recently submitted the proposed doctoral program in "Art and Visual Production”.
